Catching Up

Work has been intense for the past two months, but things are finally cooling down. It’s time to update you on some of the projects and gadgets that have been keeping me busy.

1. 3D Printing: Turning Imagination into Utility

I recently picked up a Bambu Lab A1 mini from a local seller. After a month of use, I can say this budget-friendly machine is a perfect gateway into 3D printing. Whether it’s printing carabiners, keycaps, or even a pen, the possibilities are endless.

Solving my own problems:

I had an open-shelf monitor stand that was driving me crazy—items kept falling out the back. I decided to learn just enough 3D modeling to design a custom drawer.

  • The Process: Measure -> Design -> Print -> Solve.

  • The Result: A perfectly fitted drawer that organized my workspace. There’s a unique satisfaction in creating a physical object that solves a specific problem.

The Trade-off:

The A1 mini has a build plate. While compact, it limits me from printing larger items like standard pegboards or bigger shelves. For now, it’s a great learning tool, but I’m already eyeing an upgrade to the A1 or even the P-series in the future.

2. E-Reader: Reading on the Go

I also acquired the Xteink X4. It’s a tiny e-reader that fits in a shirt pocket or can be attached to the back of a phone.

My Setup:

  • Custom Firmware: Installed CrossPoint to handle EPUB files without needing conversion.

  • Page Turning: Paired it with the Free 2 (a 2-key macro keypad) for a more tactile reading experience.

  • The ROI Challenge: To justify the cost, I set a goal: finish 5 books (approx. 300 THB each) to reach the break-even point. I’m currently on book number two!
